EVAN McCLANAHAN

My faith Story: I was baptized Methodist but ended up a Lutheran - and a pretty conservative Lutheran at that. Sure, for a while the Bart Ehrmans of the world had me wondering if Christianity was true, but after hearing arguments for the faith and diving into apologetics, I realized everyone else had a lot more to answer for than I did. To put it another way, I realized that Christianity cannot not be true.

My Ministry: I'm the pastor of Houston's oldest Lutheran church, founded in the 1840s. We have come a long way since being a German immigrant congregation. Across the street from HCC, we have an active sidewalk outreach to college students (in non-COVID times). We also started a debate series, formed a preschool, and began a radio show in the past few years. We remain one of those congregations that does not own a drum set or electric bass. i.e., our worship remains wonderfully traditional.

What I Believe: I am a confessional Lutheran, which means I affirm the historic creeds of the Church, assume the Reformers were right in their debates with Rome, and make distinctions with Calvinists when necessary. I affirm the inerrancy of the Bible. Whatever you think of "get off my lawn" guy is probably true for me. I would fall on the right of most people on most issues. Hey, someone has to hold the line!
